Media Art Part 1: The outdoor Sphere LED Display

Sphere LED Display?

The Sphere LED Display is a spherical structure seamlessly covered with LED screens, offering a full 360-degree display. Its design is inspired by iconic landmarks such as the Sphere in Las Vegas and the Times Square Ball in New York.

The Las Vegas Sphere is an entertainment arena that hosts concerts, cinematic shows, and sports events. It features LED screens both inside and outside, with the largest LED screens that create immersive, three-dimensional effects. The Times Square Ball, located atop One Times Square, is illuminated by LEDs during the New Year countdown and has become a global symbol of celebration. Both serve not only as LED displays but also as iconic digital art installations that symbolize their respective cities.

Unlike standard LED display, the spherical form of the Sphere LED Display provides a unique and captivating visual experience. It delivers a grand yet refined aesthetic, making it ideal for media art, decorative installations, visual performances, and advertising. It is also well-suited for events, museums, trade shows, clubs, shopping malls, and more.

The Sphere can adapt to a variety of concepts depending on the displayed contents, allowing the audience to appreciate it as a work of art. It represents how advanced LED display technology is evolving into a new form of media architecture.

The Sphere

The Sphere we will showcase is a large-scale structure with a 6mm pixel pitch and a 7-meter diameter. All LED panels are seamlessly integrated using pre-engineered data to ensure precision and visual consistency. For the stable installation, every step, from design to demo, is carefully planned and executed.

Designed for outdoor use, the Sphere is built to withstand all weather conditions with an IP67 waterproof rating. It can also be customized to meet your specific requirements, including various sizes and pixel pitches. Its innovative spherical shape allows for a wide range of applications across diverse fields.

The Sphere in Seoul, South Korea

In March 2025, the Sphere was installed at Seokchon Lake Park in Seoul, South Korea. As part of a collaboration with Volvox Labs, its cutting-edge LED technology perfectly complements the creative and visual engaging content displayed on it. The content blends harmoniously with both the natural surroundings and the urban environment. With a 360-degree viewing angle, the Sphere enhances the visual experience, captivating passersby and boosting engagement. As a result, visitors to the park may stop out of curiosity, drawn in by its immersive scale and captivating content. With its significant presence, the Sphere has become a landmark of media architecture.

Additionally, we successfully completed the Sphere installation at Seokchon Lake Park ourselves, demonstrating our capability to deliver and install the Sphere in a variety of settings with full flexibility and customization.

The Importance of Content

While the technology and performance of the Sphere are important, the content shown on the Sphere plays an equally significant role. Depending on the content, the Sphere’s concept and purpose can shift, directly influencing the audience experience.

Through in-depth discussions with Volvox Labs, we developed content that perfectly aligns with the Sphere’s exterior design and technical specifications, presenting the Sphere as a form of media architecture. The content varies between day and night, carefully tailored to complement the surrounding environment at each time. This ensures the visuals are both appropriate and engaging, drawing the attention of viewers. Their visual appealing content enhances the Sphere’s presence as a work of media art.
